Adrian Cardenas, Ruiner Of Dreams

Today, in separate trades, the Cubs traded Geovany Soto and Ryan Dempster to the Rangers for prospects. Lost at the bottom of the transactions page was this roster move:

“Recalled INF Adrian Cardenas from Iowa (PCL).”

A.J. Burnett won’t forget this “minor” move, as he took a no-hitter two outs into the 8th inning tonight. Then, pinch-hitting for the pitcher, Adrian Cardenas came up and singled to right - only the eighth hit of his entire career. Burnett might well have been happy that his old Marlins teammate Dempster got to join a contender. But he really must wish the Cubs had decided to recall an extra pitcher to replace him instead.

Stephen Drew pinch-hit in the eighth inning last night, down 1-0, and immediately hit an RBI single to tie the game. In the top of the tenth, he came up again, and hit another RBI single to put the D-Backs up 2-1. His teammates weren’t able to bring him home, and the bullpen coughed up the lead in the bottom of the inning.
By the time he came up in the 12th, score still tied 2-2, Drew felt like a put-upon roommate. No one else was contributing on offense, the dugout was filled with dirty dishes, and Justin Upton totally ignored the chore chart which clearly stated it was his week to drive in some runs. So Drew sighed and struck out, and probably left a passive-aggressive note on the clubhouse fridge, and the Pirates rallied to win in the bottom of the inning.

Jim Tracy: “Fool me once, shame on me. You fool me, you can’t get fooled again.”

This is a great story of baseball trickery, made better by the history of the managers involved. Jim Tracy used to work for the Pirates, while Hurdle was replaced by Tracy in Colorado, despite having led the Rockies to the World Series 18 months earlier. In any Pirates-Rockies game this year, you can expect Pittsburgh to empty their arsenal of hidden ball tricks, suicide squeezes, and those plays where the pitcher pretends he’s throwing a pickoff to first but then he wheels and actually throws it to third. All while Clint Hurdle sits in the dugout and mutters, “I’ll show you an in-game strategist, O’Dowd!”

oldtimefamilybaseball:

With Josh Rodriguez on first base and Jose Tabata up to bat with two outs in the bottom of the 14th inning and pitcher Garrett Olsen on deck, Jim Tracy was faced with two decision: pitch to Tabata or go after the pitcher with runners on first and second.

Instead, being the wise sage that he is, Clint Hurdle put Andrew McCutchen in the lead off circle, daring Jim Tracy to call his bluff. Tracy then pitched to Tabata who hit the game-winning double high off the Clemente wall.

From the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette:

“Asked if the move was a decoy to get the Rockies to think McCutchen was up next … “No, come on, why would we do that,” Hurdle said with a sly chuckle.

After fourteen innings, I don’t blame anyone for just wanting to get the game over and it’s very possible that after 5 hours and 11 minutes, Jim Tracy might have missed a bit of game strategy.

But know this, the Pirates are now 5-3 and they are even doing crafty, smart things. No, they probably won’t win 82 games this season, but no longer is the greatest threat at PNC Park the health effects from a Primanti Bros sandwich.

The Pirates designated Akinori Iwamura for assignment today. They have ten days to trade him, but realistically, they’ll be releasing him outright. In his two months with the club, Iwamura hit .182, with two home runs and nine RBIs, meaning he received over half a million dollars for each run batted in. Pittsburgh Pirates baseball!
Tampa traded Iwamura to Pittsburgh for Jesse Chavez, to clear space for Ben Zobrist and Sean Rodriguez. They then immediately flipped Chavez to the Braves for Rafael Soriano, who has a 1.52 ERA and 16 saves (zero blown!). So Pittsburgh could had Soriano instead of Iwamura, but instead they have Octavio Dotel, who is 12 for 15 in save opportunities, and has a 5.84 ERA. Pittsburgh Pirates baseball!
GM Neil Huntington would be fired for this move, except the Pirates would then have to eat his salary, too.

I feel like this is an additional insult to the Pittsburgh Pirates. The hat, at the very least.

Sure, Stephen Strasburg struck out 14 in seven innings tonight, but he was facing the Pittsburgh Pirates. Any one of us could strike out seven or eight Pirates in seven innings. Ronnie Cedeno once struck out looking against a pitching machine, after all.
Let me know when Strasburg makes his debut against a major league team.
