Team USA celebrates with Doug Collins. No one hugged Bob Fitzgerald and there’s a good reason for that.

So what if the Irish only ever medal in cross-country running or boxing? Boxer Katie Taylor delivered to win Ireland’s first gold since Michelle Smith in 1996, and first drug-free gold since Michael Carruth in 1992, who won for, what else, boxing. They also took bronze in the hundred-liter chug back in the Athens Games, but that was only a demonstration sport, and judged horribly dangerous.
They’ve got a chance at another boxing medal later in the week, but for right now, Katie Taylor is Ireland’s sweetheart. And if you don’t agree, she’ll punch you until you do!

Maggie Steffens dominated the women’s water polo final, scoring five goals in their 8-5 win over Spain. Steffens and the US dominated after a tight first quarter, with Spain rallying only in the final hopeless minutes. Also, she’s a defender.
She and her sister Jessica both won gold, making them the Venus and Serena of water polo, only way better at treading water and not nearly as good with the serve-and-volley game. Although if Maggie was allowed to hold Serena’s head underwater, they might have a decent shot on the tennis court.

It’s a threepeat for Misty May-Treanor and Kerri Walsh Jennings, who defeated their American opponents in straight sets to win their third volleyball gold medals. May-Treanor and Walsh Jennings dropped only one set in their run to victory, the most dominating beach performance since Johnny Lawrence vs. Daniel LaRusso, or perhaps Allies vs. Germans, in the Normandy ‘44 Games.

It’s not Navarro’s fault that the Blazers matched Minnesota’s contract offer, Nic Batum!
After watching France and Russia play so far, the T-Wolves can’t be too upset they had to settle for Andrei Kirilenko. The way he’s playing, AK-47 absolutely deserves his big contract - and his annual freebie, too.
nbaoffseason:

When Batum was asked why he punched  Navarro in the groin, he responded by saying, “I wanted to give him a good reason to flop”

Gabrielle Douglas, 2012 women’s all-around gold medalist. This is a historic victory, as I believe she’s the first-ever Gabby to win individual gymnastics gold.
That’s two gold medals for Gabby, putting her just 16 behind Larissa Latynina. Can she catch her??? (No.)
