Grateful Dead drummer Mickey Hart performs “Take Me Out to the Ballgame” during Jerry Garcia Tribute Night at AT&T Park. The crowd was into it, though Lou Piniella complained that the song shouldn’t have lasted fourteen minutes. Hart insisted that the three drum solos and the five-minute “space music” section were crucial to his interpretation of the song.
Tim Lincecum seemed to really enjoy the rendition, though he referred all post-game questions to his new publicist, Mr. Natural.

You who choose to lead off must follow
But if you slide, you slide alone
If you ignore the third base coach, then who’s to guide you?
If I knew the way, I would drive you home

Tonight is Jerry Garcia Tribute Night in San Francisco, with bobblehead giveaways, tie-dyed caps, and, of course, the Rally Rabbi blowing the shofar at a pre-game kosher barbecue. I’m not sure what the connection is - Jewish Heritage Night isn’t until the end of the month - but maybe there’s a connection, as both the Jews and the Deadheads are wandering tribes. In fact, with Pat Burrell, Andres Torres, and Aubrey Huff entrenched as starters, “wandering tribe” also describes the Giants outfield.
