Off-Day Note
Eugenio Velez tried to hang out downtown on the Giants’ day off, but he kept missing the bus. It seemed like an easy, almost routine task to board a MUNI bus, but Velez kept making ill-advised dashes to earlier stops on the route, only to have the bus drive by him. Onlookers were impressed by his speed, but questioned Velez’s decision-making.
Eventually, Velez got frustrated by his string of failures. He took his bus fare out of his pocket, tossed it up, and tried to knock it into the air with a rolled-up newspaper. Unfortunately, the coins bounced harmlessly into the gutter. A passerby took pity on him and threw him a quarter, but it went right through Velez’s hands.
Said the passerby, “Eugenio was very exciting to watch, but ultimately, not very good at the tasks he was trying to accomplish. I’d rather ride on a bus with John Bowker or even Fred Lewis.”
