Ron Washington: Bullpen Mismanager Extraordinaire
Neftali Feliz:
Game One: Not used until Rangers had already blown five run lead.
Game Two: Used to “save” five run lead.
Game Three: Used to “save” eight run lead.
Game Four: Not used in bases loaded situation in the eighth inning, probably because he has already pitched two games in a row and can’t be used in a multi-inning situation.
The ninth inning is a magical time, the province of the mystical creature touched by the baseball gods and dubbed “closer.” It doesn’t matter if the game’s out of reach, if the game is close in the eighth, or if your closer was used as a starting pitcher before this season. A closer’s magic is based on a sacred covenant with the baseball gods called “the save rule,” and you defy it at your peril.
To be fair, Texas leads the series 3-1.
