Gods Do Not Answer Letters: Updike on Ted... →
R.I.P., John Updike.
Understand that we were a crowd of rational people. We knew that a home run cannot be produced at will; the right pitch must be perfectly met and luck must ride with the ball. Three innings before, we had seen a brave effort fail. The air was soggy; the season was exhausted. Nevertheless, there will always lurk, around a corner in a pocket of our knowledge of the odds, an...
Will Clark Returns to the Giants →
This is the most exciting off-season acquisition by the Giants since they signed Bonds in 1992. Will the Thrill became available when his boss quit in Arizona, but it couldn’t have hurt that the Giants’ new boss is William Neukom, which is almost the same as Clark’s name, William Nuschler.
The Giants haven’t had a good-hitting first baseman since they let Clark go fifteen...
The Communist BCS, Continued
Vamsi: I just realized that the BCS is completely communist
Vamsi: If the SEC/B12 are so good they'd land 2 teams yearly anyway in a tournament
Vamsi: Instead the 8-4 acc winner is being rewarded for mediocrity
Vamsi: In a tourney, if you're good, you get the $, nothing's lost. if you're not (e.g., ACC, or just any conference having a down year), you pay the price, not take a spot away from a more deserving team.
Sean: But it's more like, a really entrenched communist system
Sean: Where there's those obligatory bids, and also cronyism
Sean: Ohio State is like the head of the KGB
Sean: Two Big 10 teams in the BCS?
Sean: Again?
Sean: Jim Tressel is a party loyalist
i just realized
indian:
that the BCS is completely communist.
Dumping Gatorade
After three NFL playoff games, we’ve had only one Gatorade bath, with Ken Whisenhunt in Arizona. The Chargers-Colts game ended too suddenly for San Diego to set it up, and it looked like Baltimore thought better of soaking John Harbaugh after setting up the bath. (It is possible they just did a piss-poor job of soaking him.)
I think this is a good omen for the playoff futures of the...
Favre Sounds Ready To Retire →
Well that settles it. I don’t expect to hear much more about this story in the future.
I'm just throwing this out there
Is Norv Turner a good coach now?
Jack Haley says Charles Barkley isn’t allowed in the Champions Club. Fennis Dembo had no problem with the Chuckster coming in.
To Elaborate...
I would specifically predict that Kurt Warner fumbles at least once in his own territory, and that Arizona proves very ineffective at stopping the run, and that Jerious Norwood reels off one 40-yard run in the fourth quarter. Rookie quarterbacks in the playoffs are worrisome, but as Brett Favre taught us last week, super-old quarterbacks are even worse.
Dominant Animal Theory: Falcons over...
For the Record...
I like Indy and Atlanta today.
